Freeman's Mill

The Alcovy River Grist Mill, more commonly known as Freeman’s Mill or Swann’s Mill, was originally constructed between 1868-1879 by brothers, John Griffin Loveless and Levi J. Loveless.  It is located on the southern bank of the Alcovy River just north of Alcovy Road and east of Bramblett Shoals Road.

The Alcovy River Mill is a superb example of the typical rural gristmill found along rivers throughout Georgia in the middle 19th century. The Georgia Department of Agriculture record shows that by 1876, there were 1,262 water-powered mills in the state. Today, less than 200 of these mills remain standing. Alcovy River Mill remained in operation until 1986 and as of 1996 it was said to be one of only 15 mills in the state of Georgia left in working order, and the only one in Gwinnett County. The mill was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996, for its significance in architecture, engineering, industry and social history.
